Opinions and Garbage

I noticed a change in the people within my networks on social websites over the past couple years. Slowly people began to open up more, speaking up and sharing their opinions on everything. The “like” button and the “retweet” was their fuel. They soon discovered that other people agreed with their opinions, even though they were different. I began to see a new side to many people I didn’t even know was there.

Then it changed, and it changed fast. People began to mistake the “being myself” attitude for the “imma do me” attitude. Those opinions and thoughts became completely unfiltered and people felt fine about it, because they had the encouragement of their peers. Whether their peers supported the posts because they agreed with them or found them entertaining is beside the point. The posts became more frequent and less well thought out. They were written poorly and started to become offensive at times.

It’s gotten bad and this is what social networking has done to our generation. It is a new internet age. Everyone is online now, but it is still evident those of us who have used it for some time and those of us who are still relatively new to it all.

I don’t intend for any of this to sound bigoted, but if you want to consider it another internet complaint go ahead. It may even sound hypocritical but know this: This isn’t some post I spewed out. It’s something that I’ve thought about for some time now, discussed with others, and wrote without the intention of singling out any specific groups of people.

All I ask is that we think of what we are posting before we post it. Yes you have your own blog, news feed, etc. but that does not mean that you should post everything that comes to your mind.

That shit’s for twitter.
